The Optimist Junior Golf Program is an exciting and unique junior golf program for ages 10-18. More than 5,000 boys and girls throughout the United States and Canada and in several foreign countries compete in official Optimist qualifying tournaments. The best of these golfers, along with international golfers from around the globe, advance to the annual Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. Commonly referred to as simply the Optimist, the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships is one of the largest and most prestigious junior golf events in the world. Several well-known professional golfers have participated in Optimist-sponsored championships including Amy Alcott, Brandie Burton, John Daly, Billy Mayfair, Phil Mickelson, Nancy Lopez, Nick Price, Craig Stadler, David Toms and Tiger Woods. In addition to top-level tournament golf, participants have the opportunity to meet new friends and to have a great deal of fun. Each year, more than 650 junior golfers from 30 countries participate in the Optimist.
Our club has hosted a qualifying tournament at the local Binder Park Golf course the last number of years. The tournament is typically held sometime during the first few weeks of June. It is a one day event and our club pays fees to send the winners onto the next level. We also supply a lunch to all participants on the day of the event. Along with the Optimist International Junior Golf event our club also originated the local All-City Girls Golf Tournament which is also held every fall at The Binder Park Golf Course. When a date is set for the Junior Golf Tournament next spring an entry form will be posted on the site.
Perhaps participation was dampened due to the Sunday morning rain showers, but the youth that waited it out and showed up for free golf and lunch provided by our club had an enjoyable golf experience. Special thanks to long-time club member and tenure chairperson of the Junior World of Golf Tournament John Peruzze and club members who participated with the golf scores and assisting with the lunch we provided to the young golf competitors and their families. Also, thanks to the Battle Creek Enquirer for the coverage of our event. Five youth golfers were selected to advance to the state tournament; click on the following link for tournament scores and details: Optimist Jr. Golf Results 2014
Club member Lee Griffin (left) made arrangements for the food we provided to the participants and club member Dave Linville (right) was the designated barbeque chef. Not sure about that one hot dog on the grill?
