Baseball Stories

Our club was honored to have former Professional Major League Baseball umpire, Mike Reilly, present a program during our weekly meeting on October 16th. Mike is native to Battle Creek and even given the nickname “Corn Flakes Reilly” by the late longtime Detroit Tiger baseball broadcaster, Ernie Harwell. Mike umpired in the major leagues from 1977 until his retirement in 2011. Just prior to his retirement, he became Major League Baseball’s senior umpire; his 4,362 career games ranked ninth in major league history. He umpired in 4 World Series, including the winning Detroit Tigers series in 1984, plus 4 mid-season All-Star games.

Mike entertained a well-attended meeting, which included youth from the local community, with numerous baseball stories and answered many questions those in attendance had about baseball and his life experiences relative to the profession. After the meeting he conversed with club members and signed baseballs for the youth.

Pictured below are Mike presenting to our club and his signing of baseballs to Jason and Sarah Kushion.2014-10-OptimistReilly1

All City Girls Golf Tournament

Our club’s first youth event of the year was our sponsorship of the All City Girls Golf Tournament. It was held on a pleasant October 2nd afternoon at the local Binder Park Golf Course. There are five schools in the Battle Creek metropolitan area, but only Harper Creek and Lakeview High Schools had a girl’s golf team this year for competition.  The event was chaired by club member John Peruzze. Our club provided the trophies plus pizza and beverages for the participants.  Click on the links below to obtain a Battle Creek Enquirer’s summarization about the event.

Club Officer Installation

On September 30th the three local Optimist clubs’ from Battle Creek convened at Clara’s on the River restaurant in Battle Creek to install the new club officers for the 2014-15 Optimist year.  The host of the event was the Battle Creek Optimist Club. Our club was represented by 15 club members in attendance. Those in attendance purchased a meal of their choice from the menu, were entertained with the opportunity to win numerous door prizes and heard reports from the three clubs about their last year’s successful projects that supported the youth of our community.  Pictured below (L-R) are the Harper Creek club officers in attendance that were sworn in for their specific position: John Sims, Sr. – Vice-President, David Jackson – Treasurer, Chad Kyger – President, Al Miller – Board of Directors  and Dick Brown – Board of Directors.2014-09-OptimistHCOfficers
