Youth Burn Camp Program

Shaun Abbey, a local high school graduate, who now resides with his family in Kentwood, Michigan, presented a very uplifting program during our weekly meeting on October 24th. Shaun is a Captain at his local Fire Department and an Executive Board Member on the Great Lakes Burn Camp.

There is an annual summer and winter week-long camp in Michigan available for burn injured children aged 6 to 17. These camps are run by a non-profit volunteer organization. The camps provide a fun and caring environment for children who have suffered from burn trauma. The camp atmosphere encourages children to laugh, play, heal, grow and just “be a kid” while joined with other burn-injured children from across the United States and Canada. The youth can share their stories and bond with each other without intrusive stares from other kids and adults. What a worth-while program! Passing of Dynamic Member

Our club mourns the loss of long-time active club member and local philanthropist Jim Hazel. Jim, age 73, suffered a severe stroke and died October 13, 2013. Jim was in attendance at most club meetings and events throughout his Optimist years and with his vast experience and knowledge of community operations, he was a tremendous asset to our club. He will be sincerely missed. He is pictured below in September 2010 congratulating new club President Terry Eisen at our meet-the-president outdoor meeting.

All-City Girls’ Golf

Our club’s first youth sponsored event of the new Optimist year was held October 3rd at the Binder Park Golf Course. Long-time club member John Peruzze again chaired the All-City Girls’ Golf tournament; it was our club’s 15th year for the event. Although there are five city schools, only two have a Girl’s Golf team this year. Lakeview High School prevailed as the winner, beating Harper Creek High School 178-217. Lakeview Senior Megan Strole and Lakeview Junior Julie Ryan tied for medalist honors with a three over par score of 41. All participants and spectators were treated by our club with pizza and beverages after the event. Pictured below are Medalists Strole and Ryan.
